March 2015

The month of March has been a good one for us. Our little Brooklyn is growing and showing her personality more and more, and Landon is still such a fun little boy!

Brooklyn is now 2 months old, weighs 11lb 3oz (54th percentile), is 23" long (81st percentile) and is in the 98th percentile for head circumference.

Our biggest excitement here is that Brooklyn smiling lots more. She is especially happy when she wakes up in the morning and in the evening, and throughout the day she'll usually smile when you make eye contact with her.

She also began cooing over the last month. The first time was when I was holding her and looked down at her. Immediately she gave out an "ahhhhh". We went back and forth with "ahhhhh"s for a few minutes. We look forward to having more conversations than one every couple of days.

Brooklyn has gotten stronger over the last month. She holds her head up much better and always wants to be arched back looking at stuff rather than snuggling up on our shoulders. She also sometimes tries to practice standing up in our laps (the optimal word being "tries" because her poor little legs don't last more than a few seconds).

She loves relaxing during bathtime. Brooklyn seems to enjoy the warm(ish) water and staring out of the kitchen window (or at the shutters, more likely). Whatever it is, she's usually quiet and content when in the bathtub.

We've introduced bottles to her, but she is not as interested as we (mostly I) had hoped. We won't give up though. I am determined to be able to leave the house without her for more than an hour! (She will soon learn how stubborn I am.)

In addition to shutters, she loves ceiling fans, moving or not. I don't know what it is about fans that makes all babies obsessed with them, but I'm glad we have them in most rooms of the house!

Brooklyn is still doing well sleeping at night, usually waking up just once to eat (sometimes twice, but we've had 4 whole times when she slept through the night!).
Daddy was the only one awake at 9am!

I caught her the other day staring at her moving fingers like it was the most mind-blowing thing. She will hold on tight to your fingers if you put them in her hands and occasionally swats at toys hanging above her, but doesn't seem too interested in them for the most part.

Landon pretty much ignored Brooklyn for the first month. Since then, I think he's figured out that she's sticking around for a while. Every so often he asks to hold her, brush her hair, give her a hug, shake her rattle for her, ask to pat her on the diaper, help burp or read her books to her. (He also mimics me by trying to burp his stuffed animal or pretend broccoli stalk.) By the way, why did nobody tell me how difficult it would be to get a picture with 2 kids not looking in the opposite direction of the camera and not crying? (It's not like I'm asking for a miracle, like a smiling child or two!)

Uncle Peter, Auntie Amber and Cousins Jacob & Zoe came to visit and meet Brooklyn in the beginning of the month. Zoe and Brooklyn are just 6 months and a day apart in age, so we were very excited for them to meet, as we're sure they will grow up close. Jacob was so sweet with baby Brooklyn, as he has always been with Landon.

While they were visiting, we took Brooklyn to the beach for the first time. Jacob and Landon had a better time than Brooklyn, however.

We also headed out to Wilson Creek Winery for an afternoon to enjoy with friends with some sun, food and...wine. (These winery days are looking a little different than they used to.) ;-)

A new park with some fun water features opened up in Temecula, and it is Landon's new favorite place to go! He's been several times this month already. "New pak! New pak!"

We've headed to several parks lately and have succeeded in getting Landon over his fear of slides. (It took much coaxing, family rides, hand holding and fake "weeeeeee"s, but now he runs straight for them!) Now...how to tackle his fear of ghosts when you have no idea where he even heard that ghosts are scary?

We also headed down to the Duck Pond with Grammie and Papa. Landon enjoyed feeding the ducks with Papa and walking on the "balance beam" with Grammie.

We had our first restaurant experience with 2 children. It went fairly well. Daniel ate half his meal with Brooklyn sleeping on his lap, and Landon was handing out hugs to us left and right. We called it a "win"!

While Papa and Grammie were visiting, and again while Uncle Matt Matt and Grammie were here, Daniel and I took full advantage of the babysitting volunteers and had dinner out without any kids. It was so weird to not have any high chairs or distractions for an entire meal!

We started a new Sunday night tradition of reading and watching a TV show (so far, it's been "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" by request) in Mama and Daddy's bed. Landon loves it, and Daniel and I certainly look forward to the snuggles that we get during this family time!

Landon is beginning to show more care toward others. I drew a fish that had a mark on it which made it appear as though the fish was crying. Landon saw it, said "sad" & "pick up" and gave the drawing a hug. If someone else gets hurt he gives hugs and has started 'kissing it better' when we get hurt (or sometimes pretend to be hurt because it's so cute). I love that he's becoming such a sweet boy! (Oh, and whenever he thinks HE should be apologized to he says "sowwy" himself.)

He's such a goof. If we tell him to "wait," he will hop up on the couch, cross his ankles and put his hands behind his head. He'll sit this way for several minutes. (It started with waiting for a Chinese food delivery one night.)

We took the kiddos to the San Diego Safari Park, which was our first experience with the double stroller. Landon loves walking on his own (and being carried) so much of the time he did not stroll, but it was nice to have them both in it at times (as we moved much faster this way). He enjoyed the gorillas and lions the most. Actually, he enjoyed the peanut butter sandwich and the elevator the most.

I took the kids to the library for another little show. They had a clown-ish act that was entertaining for Landon. He enjoyed most of it, until the guy got up on one of those really tall unicycles. Landon seemed to be nervous for the guy and kept saying "get down, get down". It worked out well that we went with a friend and her daughter because, in addition to being able to chat and catch up, I don't know how I would have managed feeding Brooklyn while keeping Landon sitting/focused/safe.

We finally assembled Landon's Christmas present from Uncle Matt Matt, a mini-trampoline. Landon LOVES it, and it appears that he will be spending quite some time outside on it! He still loves playing outside, whether it's blowing bubbles, pushing his little lawn mower around, "swimming", running around or playing t-ball or soccer, he's all for it!

Landon knows that his whole name is "Nandon Gaygee Kaypouwis" and knows that his birthday is "Apwil tenty-fird". He has so many funny words, and we love trying to decipher what he's saying with his cute toddler accent! He can tell when we don't understand what he's saying (even if we try to fake it), but he does a pretty good job of finding other ways to explain what he's trying to say so that we understand about 98% of the time.

Last weekend we attended the Temecula Valley Family Fair. Brooklyn did an amazing job of sleeping through most of it. Landon had fun on the blow-up bouncy things, the carousel, getting his face painted, looking at the turtles and musicians and, most importantly, talking to Spiderman. He was nervous about the carousel and wanted to get off as soon as I put him on the horse, but once it started he wanted MORE!

St. Patrick's Day was a good one, but we're getting excited for Easter (and Landon's 2nd birthday)!

March Bloopers:
"Is this how you put your lotion on, Mom? Oh, and your chapstick too?"

Our little Houdini.

"Rice? In MY mouth? I would NEVER eat the uncooked rice that you told me was only for playing! Don't you trust me? Here, I'll prove it."

I wondered why it smelt like coffee while I was feeding Brooklyn one day. "Help Dada" was his explanation when I got into the kitchen to find out what Landon had been up to. (At night Landon loves to "help" Dada fill the coffee maker, but Dada wasn't even home this time.) Landon had the spoon in his hand, had scooped the coffee and walked across the kitchen to pour it into several Tupperware containers. He even got the filter out. He really did seem to think that he was being helpful!
